Dem’ Nutz Founders, Dana Chann and Gary Wong Releases Peppermint Pistachio Crack and Bacon Pecan Crack (Made with Real Bacon) for the Holidays

Dem’ Nutz was launched during the pandemic in 2021 by dynamic husband and wife team Dana and Gary. While Dana was doing Mobile Notary work one day, she took a sample of our parent’s homemade honey walnuts and gave it to a client. Originally, the client states she didn’t want to try it as she thought they would be hard for her teeth. Dana told her it’s not hard, but rather light, crispy and not overly sweet, so she gave it a try and loved them. She asked how to buy some for the holidays to give out to friends and families and Dana told her she doesn’t know but will go home and ask her Mother-in-Law if she would make some to sell. “We continued to test out the honey walnuts by giving it away for free on Facebook and got positive feedback that they were delicious. Gary has a great sense of humor, so he is the one who named the company and that’s how Dem’ Nutz was born. We started at 2 local Farmers Market selling only 3 flavors (honey walnuts, spicy walnuts and honey pecans). After 9 months at the Farmers Markets, we ventured out to do pop-up events where we were able to reach more people and spread Dem’ Nutz around. We hand make all of our nutz and crack (“thin brittle”) in small batches from scratch with all natural ingredients and now travel within California and Arizona to sell our nutz.  We now have created over 10 flavors of nutz which includes honey walnuts, spicy walnuts, honey pecans, spicy honey pecans, garlic parm cashews, spicy garlic pistachios, almond crack, strawberry cashew crack, peppermint pistachio crack, spicy pistachio crack, lemon pepper almonds, ranch almonds, honey glazed cheetos and the newest is the bacon pecan crack. In addition to our delicious nutz, we also have branded merchandise such as boxers, hats, beanies and the best yet is the customized nut sack gift set where you can customize anyone’s name or phrase on this one-of-a-kind unique gift set that is perfect for birthdays, holidays or any day.”

Dana comes from a background of marketing and customer service, and Gary has extensive IT experience. “Together, we have continued to grow this business and were able to leave our W2 jobs. We are grateful every day to be able to bring smiles, laughter and delicious nutz to people. How has your company grown since 2021?

Since 2021, our company has grown from 3 nutz flavors to now over 10+ nutz and cracks flavors. Developing our cracks which are super thin softer brittles has been a game changer for us because we always get the OMG OMG reaction when they sample the product and ask us, what did I just taste and we tell them Crack. We’ve also left the two local Farmers Markets that we first started with to now doing strictly pop-up events. We used to only do Southern California events, but now we travel to Northern California and Arizona for our events, too. We like to spread Dem’ Nutz around. 

A few lessons we have learned is don’t damage a rental van or it can be costly.  A big event with a lot of vendors doesn’t necessarily translate to a great sales event because people have to spread their spending amongst all the vendors that are there. It’s a great thing to network with other vendors because they can share what other great events they have done and would recommend. Always be prepared for any weather conditions like wind, rain or extreme heat when doing an event.  

Tell us about Dem’ Nutz and what makes them unique? 

Dem’ Nutz is a brand we are proud to have started and grown from scratch with no business or culinary experience. We always catch people’s attention with our tent, branding and hanging customized nut sacks because we can see and hear the giggles. We make all of our nutz and crack by hand from the start which is sourcing our raw nutz to glazing and then hand packing each bag.  Our products has the right amount of sweetness where it’s not over-powering and has a balanced of flavors.  Our slogan is “Best Nutz You’ll Have Today.”

Dem’ Nutz is unique in that we’re not only a nutz company, but we also make it memorable for our customers because they get to enjoy some delicious snacks, have a few laughs with us and can give a unique gift that is not found on Amazon. We are a playful brand and like to bring smiles, laughter and delicious nutz to people.

What are your top-sellers?

Our top sellers are the Almond Crack, Honey Glazed Pecans and Garlic Parm Cashews. The newest flavor, Bacon Pecan Crack, is also starting to grab people’s attention as it was just recently released a few weeks ago.

How excited are you for the holidays? Tell us about your holiday selections, Peppermint Pistachio Crack and Bacon Pecan Crack (made with real bacon).   

We are always excited for the holiday season as this is the time where people are thinking about what to gift for their friends and family. For those who have had our products before, they will tend to do bigger orders to give out as presents. We already have a customer who has been pre-ordering since September, 40 bags of the Almond Crack, to be ready for early December. Another customer just placed an order for early December of 46 bags which includes Almond Crack, Honey Glazed Walnuts and Garlic Parm Cashews. 

We recently just brought back our seasonal holiday flavor, Peppermint Pistachio Crack.  You’ll taste the nuttiness of the pistachios that we grind up, then the delicious glaze which has hints of peppermint flavor and topped off with the beloved peppermint candy. It’s like having thin mints or holiday in your mouth. 

The newest flavor from our lineup is the Bacon Pecan Crack. Who doesn’t love bacon? We first cook the bacon to perfection.  The aroma of bacon always makes us hungry when making it. This is a thin brittle where we crush the roasted pecans and a generous amount of bacon bits in the glaze.  There is also a smokiness from the sea salt that we sprinkle on top. It’s like you’re in bacon heaven and it’ll remind you of candied bacon.

We have done corporate customized nut sack gift set orders throughout the year for their tenant or employee appreciation.
